Serge Rachmaninov (1873 – 1943) Trio élégiaque No 1 en sol mineur (1892).
Un seul mouvement, de forme sonate, écrit du 18 au 21 janvier 1892, alors que Rachmaninov, encore étudiant, n’avait que 18 ans. Les musicologues ont vu une parenté entre cette œuvre et le Trio de Tchaïkovski en la mineur, Op. 50. La clé de cette parenté, outre le fait que ces deux trios se terminent par une marche funèbre, réside dans le motif d’ouverture ascendant de quatre notes qui est l’inversion en mineur des quatre notes par lesquelles commence le premier concerto de Tchaïkovski. Par ailleurs, deux ans plus tard, Rachmaninov composait son second trio, le fameux Op 67, à l’occasion de la mort de Tchaïkovski qui fut son aîné et son mentor.

Une première version de ce trio a été révisée par le compositeur sur les conseils de son ami Ferdinand Hiller, féru de Chopin et de Liszt, qui trouvait certains traits pianistiques de Mendelssohn démodés.
Enthousiasmé lorsqu’il entendit cette seconde version beaucoup plus romantique, Schumann publia un article très élogieux dans son journal la Neue Zeitschrift für Musik : « C’est le maître trio de notre époque comme ceux de Beethoven en si bémol et en ré et celui de Schubert en mi bémol l’étaient en son temps ».
