Sergei Rachmaninoff

The Elegiac Trio nᵒ 1 in G minor

Felix Mendelssohn

Trio No. 1 Op. 49 in D minor

Serge Rachmaninov (1873 - 1943) Elegiac Trio No. 1 in G minor (1892).

A single movement, in sonata form, written between January 18 and 21, 1892, when Rachmaninov was still a student at the age of 18. Musicologists have seen a kinship between this work and Tchaikovsky's Trio in A minor, Op. 50. The key to this kinship, apart from the fact that both trios end with a funeral march, lies in the ascending four-note opening motif, which is a minor inversion of the four notes with which Tchaikovsky's first concerto begins. Two years later, Rachmaninov composed his second trio, the famous Op 67, on the occasion of the death of Tchaikovsky, his mentor and elder.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809 - 1847) Trio No. 1 Op. 49 in D minor (1839).

  • Molto allegro agitato (D minor)
  • Andante con moto tranquillo (B flat major)
  • Scherzo leggiero e vivace (major)
  • Finale Allegro assai appassionato (D minorcoda in D major)

A first version of this trio was revised by the composer on the advice of his friend Ferdinand Hiller, a devotee of Chopin and Liszt, who found some of Mendelssohn's pianistic traits old-fashioned.
Enthralled when he heard this second, much more romantic version, Schumann published a glowing article in his journal Neue Zeitschrift für Musik: "This is the master trio of our time, as Beethoven's B-flat and D trios and Schubert's E-flat trio were in their time.
